news.yahoo.com — When health care providers are talking with adolescents about sexual health, alcohol must be a part of the conversation, conclude two researchers from the UK based on a survey of boys' and girls' attitudes about sexual relationships. "We must ensure that alcohol education is a key element of sex education and help young people to realize the vulnerability to sexual ill health alcohol abuse can create," Dr. Mark Hayter of the University of Sheffield in the UK, who conducted the research with Dr. Christina Harrison of Doncaster Primary Care Trust, told Reuters Health. In most of the world, adolescents are at high risk of sexual health problems such as unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, Hayter and Harrison note in a report in the Journal of Clinical Nursing. To better understand gender differences in how young people think about sex, the researchers conducted 10 focus groups with 35 14- to 16-year-olds. The teens were attending a sexual health clinic based at a youth club serving a "socially deprived" area with a high rate of teen pregnancy. Five groups were all girls, and the rest were all boys. read more...

news.yahoo.com — Teenage girls treated for pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) become highly vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sometimes just weeks or months after treatment, researchers at Johns Hopkins Children's Center report. The findings, according to the researchers, suggest that treating PID "with a prescription and a brochure" isn't enough to change behavior and prevent future repeat infections, which can increase the risk of chronic pelvic pain, ectopic (outside the uterus) pregnancies and infertility. read more...

news.yahoo.com — NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Postmenopausal women with low sexual desire levels reported improved sexual function after they were treated with a patch in which the male hormone testosterone was applied through the skin, a clinical study has found. However, more studies are needed to confirm the safety of this treatment. "Many postmenopausal women continue to be sexually active despite a high level of sexual dissatisfaction, engaging in sexual activity to please their partner and maintain domestic harmony," lead author Dr. Susan R. Davis, at Monash University in Prahran, Australia, and fellow researchers note. While testosterone has proved effective for increasing libido among postmenopausal women who are on hormone replacement therapy, the effectiveness of this approach in women who are not taking estrogen is unknown. read more...

news.yahoo.com — Groundbreaking research suggests that pregnancy rates are much higher among teens who watch a lot of TV with sexual dialogue and behavior than among those who have tamer viewing tastes. "Sex and the City," anyone? That was one of the shows used in the research. The new study is the first to link those viewing habits with teen pregnancy, said lead author Anita Chandra, a Rand Corp. behavioral scientist. Teens who watched the raciest shows were twice as likely to become pregnant over the next three years as those who watched few such programs. Previous research by some of the same scientists had already found that watching lots of sex on TV can influence teens to have sex at earlier ages. read more...

healthnews.com — Sexual dysfunction (SD) refers to a problem that makes sex less satisfying for either party. In the U.S., some 31 percent of men suffer from problems such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation and impotency, while 43 percent of women report problems like loss of libido or desire, decreased sexual arousal, lack of orgasm and painful intercourse. Surprisingly, however, only 12 percent of women say they are distressed about it. read more...

news.bbc.co.uk — Australian researchers have identified a significant link between a gene involved in testosterone action and male-to-female transsexualism. DNA analysis from 112 male-to-female transsexual volunteers showed they were more likely to have a longer version of the androgen receptor gene. The genetic difference may cause weaker testosterone signals, the team reported in Biological Psychiatry. read more...

news.yahoo.com — Millions of children in England aged from five to 16 in state-funded schools will receive compulsory lessons about subjects including sex and drug use, a minister said on Thursday. Acknowledging, however, that the announcement raises "complicated issues," the government has appointed a headteacher to carry out a review into how the new proposals can be best implemented, given local circumstances and parents' values. The new policy will apply to 6.5 million schoolchildren in 22,500 schools in England, a government spokesman told AFP. read more...

healthnews.com — Although male circumcision has been shown to effectively protect against HIV infection for men who have sex with women, there appears to be little effectiveness in protecting men who have sex with men. Circumcision is the surgical removal of a flap of skin from the tip of a man's penis. It is believed to reduce the risk of HIV transmission since the inner surface of the foreskin contains cells that are more susceptible to HIV infection than cells located on other parts of the penis. In addition, circumcision reduces the risk of developing genital ulcers that occur from diseases such as syphilis, which also lowers susceptibility to HIV during intercourse. read more...

news.yahoo.com — Sexual activity other than intercourse carries some risk of sexually transmitted disease, and doctors should make sure their patients understand that, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Many people may engage in "noncoital" sexual activities such as oral sex, mutual masturbation and anal sex to prevent pregnancy and cut the risk of STDs. However, all of these sex acts come with some degree of STD risk, and it's still important for people to protect themselves, according to an ACOG expert committee. read more...

news.yahoo.com — Teenagers arrested for juvenile offenses have a high rate of sexually transmitted diseases, so screening these teens soon after arrest may help catch many cases, a new study suggests. Past research has found relatively high rates of STDs among incarcerated adolescents, but little is known about the STD risk among teens who are arrested and then released. read more...

abc.net.au — Associate Professor Anne Mitchell has given evidence at the hearing of a complaint lodged by Launceston gay man Michael Cain. Mr Cain has complained that the Red Cross discriminated against him by refusing his offer of a blood donation because he had homosexual sex. He argues screening should be based on the safety of sexual practices, not sexual preference. Professor Mitchell said gay men who do not practise safe sex are only a small proportion of the gay community. When asked why a study showed more than 86 percent of newly acquired HIV cases were related to male to male sex, she said it was because HIV had already infected the gay community. read more...

health.yahoo.com — A new study calls into question the use of two common infertility treatments for couples who have unexplained problems having children. Doctors in Scotland tested a drug that stimulates ovulation and artificial insemination against doing nothing in couples who had no obvious reasons for their inability to conceive. Among the three groups, researchers found little difference in the numbers of couples who had babies. The study was published Friday in the British Medical Journal. "These treatments are a leap of faith," said Dr. Siladitya Bhattacharya, a professor of reproductive medicine at the University of Aberdeen and the study's lead author. "None of the treatments studied had any significant benefit over no treatment at all." Infertility affects about one in seven couples. Doctors usually try fertility pills or artificial insemination before moving on to more complicated and expensive techniques like in-vitro fertilization. Bhattacharya said that he and the five study centers no longer offer the two tested treatments for unexplained infertility problems. A third of the 580 couples in the study were simply counseled on the need to have regular sex. Another group got clomifene citrate, which stimulates the ovaries to release eggs. It is sold as Clomid, Serophene, and Milophene, among other names. read more...

msnbc.msn.com — WASHINGTON - U.S. researchers reported they may have found a way to flush out herpes viruses from hiding — offering a potential way to cure pesky and painful conditions from cold sores to shingles. They discovered that a mysterious gene carried by the herpes simplex-1 virus — the one that causes cold sores — allows the virus to lay low in the nerves it infects. It does so via microRNAs, little pieces of genetic material that regulate the activity of many viruses, the researchers report in the journal Nature. read more...

msnbc.msn.com — CHICAGO - More 70-year-olds are having good sex more often, Swedish researchers said on Tuesday in a finding bound to bring a smile to many an aging baby boomer. They found 70-year-olds of both sexes are having more sex than they did 30 years ago, and many more women report being satisfied with their sex lives. "Attitudes are more open-minded and positive today, at least in the elderly themselves," said Nils Beckman of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, whose study appears in the British Medical Journal. read more...
