news.yahoo.com — CHICAGO (Reuters) – Longer-term use of a drug that relieves withdrawal symptoms might help young people undergoing treatment for addiction to heroin or prescription painkillers like Oxycontin, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday. Young addicts who took Reckitt Benckiser's drug Suboxone for 12 weeks were less likely to abuse drugs during treatment and stayed in treatment longer than those who underwent short-term detox and counseling, they said. Dr. George Woody of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia said many treatment programs in the United States and other countries favor shorter-term detoxification and counseling for young people addicted to the drugs called opioids, but said drug treatment might be a more effective option. read more...

health.msn.com — Stimulant treatment for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) significantly cuts the odds that adolescent girls will smoke, drink alcohol or use drugs, a new Massachusetts General Hospital study shows. The finding parallels previous studies in boys, the team note. People with ADHD are at significantly increased risk for cigarette smoking and substance abuse. In the past, there were concerns that treatment of ADHD with stimulant drugs such as Ritalin might increase the risk of drug or alcohol abuse. But in several studies of boys and young men with ADHD, researchers have found that stimulant treatment actually decreases the risk and delays the onset of substance abuse in adolescence. It does not affect the risk of using tobacco, alcohol, or drugs in adulthood, however. The same researchers set out to see how stimulant treatment for ADHD affects the risk of substance abuse in adolescent girls. read more...

timesonline.co.uk — Certainly the statistics tell a story: figures published earlier this year by the magazine Druglink show that the number of drug users being admitted to hospital with cocaine overdoses is four times higher than it was eight years ago. At one London hospital, one in three young men attending A&E with suspected heart attacks were cocaine users — as men are more prone to coronary disease, they seem to be most at risk. Other research, published in the medical journal Circulation, suggests that up to 25% of heart attacks occurring in people under 30 may be due to regular cocaine use, instead of the more typical coronary artery disease. read more...

health.yahoo.com — New insight into how the brain processes the rewarding and addictive properties of nicotine sheds light on why some people seem to become addicted once they have their first cigarette, say Canadian researchers. "Nicotine interacts with a variety of neurochemical pathways within the brain to produce its rewarding and addictive effects. However, during the early phase of tobacco exposure, many individuals find nicotine highly unpleasant and aversive, whereas others may become rapidly dependent on nicotine and find it highly rewarding. We wanted to explore that difference," study leader Steven Laviolette, of the department of anatomy and cell biology at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Western Ontario, said in a university news release. One brain pathway in particular uses the neurotransmitter dopamine to transmit signals related to nicotine's rewarding properties, the researchers noted. This pathway -- the mesolimbic dopamine system -- also plays a role in addiction to a number of other substances, such as alcohol and cocaine. read more...
