abc.net.au — funeral service will be held in Sydney later this week for the latest victim of a rare but often fatal virus transmitted by horses. Thirty-three-year-old veterinarian, Dr Ben Cunneen, died last Wednesday, nearly two months after contracting the deadly Hendra virus at a clinic on the outskirts of Brisbane. It's the third human death from Hendra virus since it was first described in 1994. The virus has also claimed the lives at least 30 horses. This latest incident has prompted the Queensland Government to launch an independent review of how authorities respond to Hendra virus cases.
